A Bride's Story - Remembrances of Weddings Past

When I was a Bride
Brides of all ages share their intimate memories with Cornelia.

"The first time I ever felt pretty was in my wedding dress. It was the most beautiful thing—my mother made it with lace everywhere. I remember I looked over at Bob as we were coming back up the aisle—you should have seen the grin on his face!"

-Ellie Cook Ide of Cary, North Carolina; a game designer.

Wedding: 17 June 1962; Flint, Michigan; to Bob Ide; they were both 21.

Nan & Tom Lockwood circa 1997.
“I felt like a princess—and I don’t know that I’ve ever felt like that in my life. Like every cell in my body was tingling with happiness. I cried so much—so much heart energy flowing.”

-Nan Holley Forester Lockwood of Houston, Texas; a business entrepreneur.

Wedding: 11 January 1997; Houston, Texas; second marriage at age 41to Thomas William Lockwood, age 35, his first marriage.

Daniel & Jeanne Powell on their wedding day with her three children: Jacob, Jay & Joy Van Dee.
“I remember being nervous; like I was floating over myself. I don’t remember very much; in fact, when I looked at pictures from the wedding later, I was standing with people that I didn’t remember speaking to or even remember that they were there. I do remember thinking that Daniel was awfully calm and it must be because he didn’t know what he was getting into—but I did!”

-Jeanne Reid Powell of Carson, Alabama; a hospice center manager.

Wedding: 17 September 1983; Carson, Alabama; second marriage at age 29; mother of three small children; married Daniel Powell, age 37, his first marriage.

“When I married the second time at 45, I was almost the same age as my mother when she died. I lost her when I was 19 and it affected me deeply; I was depressed a lot in my life after that. What I knew for sure about this wedding was that I wanted it to be in the spring—the time of renewal—because it felt like a coming back to life! I felt joyous at my wedding—I could hardly speak. I came down the stairs in my older sister’s home when they started playing I Left My Heart in San Francisco—my husband had selected it—but this wonderful feeling was more like ‘I found my heart in San Francisco’ where I met him. My three sisters—who had planned the whole thing—surprised me when the minister asked, ‘Who gives this bride…?’; they stood up in the front row and said proudly, ‘We do!’.”

-Gloria Spurgeon-Smith of Daly City, California; legal assistant in the San Francisco City Attorney’s office.

Wedding: 14 April 1993; San Francisco, California; second marriage at age 45; married Leonard Smith, age 56, his second marriage.

"I knew that life was changing and it wouldn't be carefree anymore. We were freshman in college and I was four months pregnant and it was 1968—a very different world from today. But we wanted to have a real wedding with our families present—not just go to a justice of the peace. The family minister said that he would not marry us if we felt we had to get married, but only if we wanted to get married. Bruce and I looked at each other and in that moment we chose to be married. It was a difficult time, but through the years, when times got tough, we remembered the choice we made and have never regretted it."

-Sally Crannell Queen of Arlington, Virginia; author & business owner.

Wedding: 20 April 1968; Dallas, Texas; married Bruce Queen; they were both 19.
