Trappings of the Wedding: Exploring the Wedding's Creative Elements
Wedding Veils

In this issue of Weddings of Grace we explore the mystery & lore of the bridal veil. “Wedding veils have been an integral part of bridal costumes for at least two thousand years. In Roman times, brides covered their entire their entire bodies with red veils. These were symbols of purity and a shield against malicious spirits that attended this sort of liminal event. Nowadays, the veil has a more romantic function. When the groom lifts the veil, he sees the bride as if for the first time—not as a girlfriend or fiancée, but as the one woman he has chosen as a lifelong mate.”1
